SANRAL Projects
Established in 1998, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) is a state-owned entity tasked with overseeing the national road network, encompassing major arterial routes throughout South Africa. From its inception, SANRAL embarked on an ambitious program to expand, upgrade, and maintain this extensive network, implementing tolling systems to secure vital funding for ongoing infrastructure projects. Notably, SANRAL introduced the N1 and N2 Winelands Toll Projects in 2001, bolstering connectivity and safety in the Western Cape. The agency garnered attention with the introduction of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, including electronic tolling, which sparked widespread debate and legal challenges.
